Client Requirement & Objectives

Lack of Visual Oxygen Feedback

There was no existing mechanism for divers to visually monitor oxygen levels in real time, leading to potential safety hazards during deep-sea expeditions.

Pressure-Based Oxygen Estimation

The device must incorporate a pressure sensor to continuously estimate remaining oxygen and emit corresponding LED signals.

LED-Based Alert System

The LED should blink green for >30% oxygen, orange for 10–30%, and red for <10%, providing a simple yet effective visual cue to the diver.

High Visibility & Ease of Use

The design must ensure the LED is clearly visible from a distance of at least 10–20 meters underwater, assisting not just the diver but also their team.

LED Control Algorithm

Developed logic to dynamically switch between green, orange, and red blinking patterns based on tank pressure readings.

Waterproof Enclosure

Engineered a sealed, rugged casing that withstands deep-sea pressure and protects electronics from saltwater intrusion.

Visibility Optimization

Incorporated a high-intensity LED driver circuit to ensure brightness and visibility up to 20 meters underwater.

Key Challenges & Solutions

Underwater Visibility

The biggest challenge was ensuring the LED light remained clearly visible in murky, low-light conditions. We used a specialized high-power LED and optical diffuser to enhance beam spread.

Power Efficiency

Balancing LED brightness with battery life was critical; we implemented pulse-width modulation (PWM) to conserve power without compromising visibility.

Sensor Calibration

Pressure sensors were precisely calibrated for diving conditions and tested against simulated tank environments.

Compact Integration

Fitting all components into a small, pressure-proof housing required multilayer PCB design and efficient thermal management.
